No project is identical and each project is treated uniquely. All of our projects are thoroughly scoped right from the beginning to minimize surprises for the client down the road. A project charter is developed where all scope details are outlined. This document might include project direction, key dates, milestones, expectations, desired shot list, textures, look and feel etc… This approach allows for flexibility to organize, troubleshoot and communicate in the planning stages saving precious time and money even before production begins. The production workflow is iterative so a client will see progress renderings throughout the development of the project.
Our typical workflow for a project would be to have a discovery meeting or kick off meeting where we would assess the project and provide a detailed scope. Once the scope and timelines are agreed upon, then drawings (floor plans, building sections, elevations, landscape plans, lighting plans etc.. would be shared or uploaded to a shared platform. We recommend using a project management shared service for project review purposes such as Basecamp, Wrike, Asana etc… where files can be uploaded, reviewed, archived, shared etc… As each stage of the project progresses, the final renderings, animations and VR files would be uploaded to the project management service at regular intervals or coordinated with internal meetings etc… When the project is completed, the client may ask for the source files for archival or record purposes.
2D and or 3D raw files always need to be optimized before production. For example this involves cleaning-up AutoCAD drawings by removing all unnecessary data that will not be visible in the final images. 3D models also have to be modified such as face correction, textures, level of detail etc… Elements such as hard and soft landscaping for exterior renderings and furniture and amenities for interior renderings are created or optimized before being inserted into scenes.
This process begins as we work with you to visualize and express the core concept. Once the desired approach and expectations are established, the client supplies all digital and or physical media relating to the project. For example these files could be AutoCAD drawings, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop images, Revit plans, Maya 3D models etc Digital media gaps are identified. Once the core concept is approved by the client, the project plan is subdivided into components to increase efficiencies and track progress.
Since we use an iterative approach, Architectural specifications can be revised on a design-build basis (like most real-world projects). The client is not bound by a final submission. Production begins with the massing of 3d modeling via wireframes. During this step, black and white 3d renderings (ambient occlusion) are produced and submitted to the client as required to reinforce project direction. This step is extremely useful because the client sees preliminary massing in black and white without being persuaded or distracted by textures and lighting. Here is where the ongoing feedback loop keeps the project moving forward. Although, some clients are satisfied with ambient occlusion as final, most prefer the full experience of photo-realistic 3d rendering.
The next stage consists of previewing the footage in motion, via an animated wire frame movie presentation. Last but not least, the final stage is the delivery of the final product in high quality for the final review, feedback and revision as needed. This ensures quality control, and that accurate information and aesthetics are presented to the client, whether builder, agency, corporation, or production house.
